Share Ethernet connection

Hi

I'm doing Erasmus and in my room I have internet via Ethernet.

I tried to share that connection in order to get internet on my phone, however it seems like it doesn't work with the native OSX "Share internet" option. For some reason my phone (and other phones) won't connect to it.

My friend is another room with internet via ethernet too, but he is using windows. He was facing the same problem when trying to share his internet with windows native option too. We then heard that he should install Connectify Hotspot in order to successful share his connection, what he did and it works now.

However that program doesn't exist for Mac, so does anyone knows any program that would allow me to successful share my internet?

How did you decide the built in Internet Sharing does not work? what happens when you try it?

So when I asked for Internet for my room they asked me for my macbook mac address and they inserted in their program, so I suppose that my macbook is the only one that will work in my room, and maybe that's why the native sharing option won't work.

What happen is, when I create the hotspot in the native option it appears available in the other devices. However, when you try to connect those devices to that hotspot they won't connect.

an interesting theory, but not accurate.

Once you share your Ethernet connection over Wi-Fi, your Mac creates a software Router, and uses Network Address Translation to modify the remote device's apparent address. Your Mac then acts as an agent for the remote devices, and does not need an additional Ethernet address from your college network. Only if they specifically preclude connecting additional devices (possibly with a proxy server) should this feature be blocked.

The software Router by default appears to be 192.168.2.1, and it dispenses DHCP addresses starting at 192.168.2.2

If you look at the "Mac-side" of the connection, it always shows a "self-assigned" IP Address, to keep your Mac from thinking it leads to the Internet.

So you are trying to share your Ethernet connection out over your Wi-Fi.

Did you specify a new Network-name?

Did you specify encryption and a password? which encryption (or none)?

what symptoms at the remote devices lead you to believe the problem is the fault of the Mac?

can you ping 192.168.2.1 (the software Router) from a remote device?

Yes and yes. WPA2

On first the remote device would start to connect to hotspot but then nothing would happen and it wouldn't connect.

Now the device connects to the hotspot but there is no internet.

I believe the fault is of the Mac because I've already tried other remote devices and they didn't work and even my friends with Windows computers can't get their native hotspot system to work. That's why everybody here installs Connectify Hotspot in order to get their hotspot to work correctly.

Connectify hotspot is used to add Router capability to the primitive interface offered by Windows. There is no Mac version because it is not needed. The Mac software Router is enabled when you enable Internet sharing. But there has always been controversy over how passwords are treated between Macs and PCs. So you should try it with no encryption and no password.

Once a connection is made, you need to do something that forces network traffic, such as visit a web site. At that point if your college requires an additional login, you will be directed to their login page.
